Genoa’s Old Port is a place rich in history, charm, and modernity, representing a perfect blend of the city’s maritime past and contemporary architectural innovations. Located in the heart of Genoa, this port is a living testament to its evolution over the centuries, transforming from a crucial commercial port into a vibrant, multifunctional area attracting tourists and locals.

Il Bigo e la Biosfera

One of the focal points of the Porto Antico is the famous “Bigo,” a panoramic elevator designed by architect Renzo Piano. Inspired by the arms of port cranes, the Bigo offers breathtaking views of the city and the sea, allowing visitors to admire Genoa from a unique perspective. This modern monument, with its white structures standing out against the blue sky, has become one of the port’s most recognizable symbols.

The Biosphere, also called the “Bolla”

Not far from the Bigo, we find another Renzo Piano masterpiece: the Biosphere, also known as the “Bubble.” This spherical glass structure, located in the harbor’s waters, houses a tropical botanical garden with exotic plants and animals. The Bubble represents an oasis of tranquility and nature amidst the bustling urban environment of the harbor.

But the Old Port isn’t just modernity. Exploring the area, you might come across the Neptune Galleon (so called even though it’s actually a vessel), an imposing vessel imaginatively inspired by a late 17th-century Spanish vessel. At the bow of the vessel, you can see the statue of Neptune, with his left arm raised and his hand placed on his forehead in a guarding gesture, suggesting a posture of vigilance and protection. It’s as if the god were scanning the horizon, ever ready to intervene to safeguard the port and the city of Genoa.

The Old Port is also home to the Genoa Aquarium, one of the largest and most spectacular aquariums in Europe. With over 70 display tanks, the aquarium offers a fascinating journey through marine ecosystems from around the world, from coral reefs to polar seas. It’s a must-see destination for families and nature lovers, offering the chance to see dolphins, sharks, penguins, and a myriad of other marine species up close.

Next to the aquarium, the Galata Museo del Mare recounts the maritime history of Genoa and the Mediterranean. It is the largest and most innovative maritime museum in the Mediterranean, offering a journey into the city’s seafaring past through its interactive exhibits and precious historical artifacts such as paintings, medieval nautical charts, atlases, ship’s instruments, models, and much more.

A cultural and entertainment center

The Porto Antico also hosts numerous cultural events and festivals throughout the year. From musical performances to craft markets and food and wine fairs, there’s always something interesting and engaging to do. It’s a true microcosm of history, culture, innovation, and entertainment. Strolling along its docks, climbing the Bigo to admire the panoramic view, exploring the aquarium and maritime museum, or simply relaxing in one of its sea-view cafés is an unforgettable experience that captures the very essence of Genoa. A place where past and present blend harmoniously, creating a vibrant and captivating space for all visitors.
